13 organizations for disabled people urged the government and local executives to implement the applications of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled. During the World Disabled Week they pointed out problems of access to employment, education and health service.

The International Unions Confederation, umbrella organization of unions in 155 countries, will organize a world-wide action for the rights of Turkish Tekel workers. The Europe Unions Confederation urged the government to start talks on transferring the workers under protection of their rights immediately.

With the new regulations of the Higher Education Council, Anadolu University lays off 1,000 students working part-time at the university. The students protested against the dismissals and demanded full insurance, salary for unpaid overtime work and reduction of working hours.

Öğreten from the Initiative for a Mine-Free Turkey assessed the country's situation after ratifying the Ottawa convention in 2003, stating that there has not been any difference in the number of deaths and injuries. Representatives of the Social Democratic Foundation, the Turkish Medical Association and the Disabled People Association also evaluated the current situation.

According to the European Union expert Dr. Cengiz Aktar, Turkey missed a great opportunity to work together with the EU in the Georgian conflict, since the people in Ankara could not see Turkey’s advantageous position.
