An explosion occurred in the slop tank (waste storage tank) of a ship undergoing maintenance in the shipyard zone in Tuzla, İstanbul. One worker lost their life, while another was injured. The injured worker received on-site treatment from medical teams.
The Istanbul Governorship stated that the explosion occurred due to a gas build-up in the waste storage area.
The LIMTER-İŞ Union, affiliated with the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), also announced that the industrial accident took place on the repair ship named SEAPRINCESS, flying the Maltese flag, at the Kıran Shipyard.
The union provided information that the explosion took place in the slop tank of the ship, where waste oils accumulate.
A minor fire that broke out following the explosion was put out and the police started an investigation about the explosion.
Accordingto the Health and Safetey Labor Watch (İSİG) reports, 182 workers have been killed on the job only in July 2023, while 1,051 workers lost their lives in work-related casualtiesin the first seven months of the year. (HA/PE)
