Released after 30 years, north Syria-born author involuntarily taken to Edirne for repatriation

Abdulmenaf Osman, born in Al-Hasakah city of northeastern Syria, was released on Sunday, September 3, after serving 30 years and 6 months in Manisa Akhisar Type T Closed Prison.

Osman, who was arrested at the age of 28 and released at the age of 58, was initially taken to Akhisar Gendarmerie Station to be transferred to the Manisa Repatriation Center (GGM) due to his birthplace in Al-Hasakah, in the region controlled by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. 

Speaking to bianet, Osman's lawyer Halil Coşkun said he had a face-to-face meeting with his client Osman until 6 pm yesterday. He said, "Despite Menaf being released on Sunday, he was actually detained at Akhisar Gendarmerie Station. In the evening hours, they took him to the hospital. The commanders we spoke to told us that they would take Menaf to İzmir GGM."

Attorney Coşkun, who stated that Osman called him early this morning, said, "Our client, who has been held at Akhisar Gendarmerie Station for two days, was abducted to Edirne during the night hours. We think he was taken to the GGM there. They lied to us."

"Procedure followed is unlawful"

Coşkun expressed his concerns about his client: "According to the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, my client is among the persons who cannot be deported. These procedures are unlawful. Menaf should be given the one-month period specified in the law to go to a third country and obtain a passport."

Who is Abdulmenaf Osman?

Abdulmenaf Osman, a Rojavan writer, was born in Hesekê in 1965. He completed his primary, middle, and high school education in this city and went to the Syrian capital, Damascus, to study at the university. Osman completed his education at Damascus University's Geology Department.

Osman was detained in Batman on March 3, 1993, and sentenced to life imprisonment by the State Security Court (DGM) on charges of "attempting to separate a part of the territories under the sovereignty of the state."

Osman has nine books, two of which were published in Turkey. His play "Destê Şeş Tilî (Six-Fingered Hand)" was staged at the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality City Theaters.
