The Turkish Statistical Institution (TurkStat) has released the results of its survey on the usage of information and communication technologies by households and individuals.
According to the survey covering the first quarter of 2021, internet access and use increased compared to the previous year with men using the internet more than women.
Shopping over the internet also increased as 44.3 percent of individuals bought goods online.
Here are the results of the survey:
• 92 percent of households in Turkey have access to the internet as of 2021, up from 90.7 percent in the previous year, according to a new survey by the Turkish Statistical Institution (TurkStat).
• 61.9 percent of the households have a fixed broadband connection and 88.5 percent have a mobile broadband connection.
• The regions with the highest share of households with internet access were the "TR1" region (İstanbul) with 97.1 percent and the "TR5" region (Ankara, Konya, Karaman) with 94.2 percent, according to the survey.
• 82.6 percent of the individuals aged 16-74 used the internet in 2021, up from 79 percent in the previous year.
• 87.7 percent of men and 77.5 percent of women in the country used the internet in 2021.
• 80.5 percent of all individuals in the 16-74 age group used the internet regularly. It was 76.5 percent in the previous year.
• 58.9 percent of individuals used e-government services.
• 44.3 percent of individuals purchased goods or services over the internet. It was 36.5 percent in the previous year.
• 48.3 percent of men and 40.3 percent of women purchased goods or services over the internet. These figures were 40.2 percent and 32.7 percent in 2020, respectively.
• 70.7 percent of the people who shopped on the internet bought clothes, shoes and accessories, 40.8 percent ordered food, beverages and catering services, 33.4 percent cosmetics, beauty or wellness products and 27.7 percent purchased printed books, magazines or newspapers.
• The most purchased digital content was subscription-based services with 30.6 percent.
• The most purchased digital services were transportation services.
• The most commonly cited reasons for not shopping online were "wanting to see the product," "loyalty to shops" and "force of habit" with 34.8 percent. (HA/VK)
