In December, the deaths of at least 31 women (2 in Aydın , 1 in Nevşehir , 2 Denizli , 1 Hatay , 6 İstanbul, 2 Bursa, 1 Bartın, 1 Adana,1 Malatya, 1 Siirt, 1 İzmir, 1 Çanakkale, 3 Van, 1 Ordu, 1 Konya, 1 Maraş, 1 Manisa, 1 Bingöl, 1 Kütahya, 1 Diyarbakır, 1 Kayseri) were reported in the press as suspicious.

Men attempted to kill one woman in İstanbul. It was reported in the news that Eda Ç. in İstanbul and Remziye Y. in Diyarbakır were driven to suicide.
Sexually assaulted by two men, a woman who was a citizen of Afghanistan turned herself in to the police in Denizli for having stabbed the men to death.
In December, men threatened at least 10 women (2 in İstanbul, 1 in Urfa, 1 Edirne, 1 Diyarbakır, 1 Trabzon, 1 Aydın, three cities not reported in the news) to inflict violence or kill. One of the women was transgender.
2018 - 2019 male violence Throughout 2019, men killed at least 328 women and 15 children, raped 51 women, forced 712 women to sex work, harassed 232 women and abused 279 children. In 2019, the deaths of at least 134 women were reported in the press as "suspicious". Throughout 2018, men killed at least 255 women and 17 children, including babies, raped 61 women, harassed 188 women, forced 516 women and girls to sex work, sexually abused 347 girls and wounded at least 380 women. |
Feminicide / Murder
In December 2019, men killed at least 23 women and one man who was with the women. Last December, men killed 30 women.
Two killed women had a protection order. One killed woman was from Algeria and at least three women were subjected to systematic violence.

The "excuses" of men for killing 15 women were not reported in the news. While men killed four women "as they did not want reconciliation/wanted to break up", they reportedly killed one woman out of "jealousy", one woman for "mugging", one woman for "economic" reasons and one woman "because they did not like her".
69 percent of women were killed by their husbands/ex-boyfriends.

The relationships between two women and male perpetrators were reported in the press as "not acquaintances".
While men killed nine women with firearms, they killed seven women with sharp objects, six women by battering them (two with hard objects) and killed one woman by strangling her with a blanket.
Men killed 13 women at home and five women in public places such as on the street, in a medical street or an empty field. The scenes of five incidents were not reported in the news.

Violence against children
In Bursa, a man named İ.T. battered the 17-year-old girl N.D. on the street. In Siirt, the principal of a high school inflicted psychological violence on girl students. In Bursa, a man named E.B. battered a girl.
In Bingöl, one girl lost her life by falling off the balcony. It was alleged that the girl committed suicide because she was forced by her family to marry the man who raped her. In Kars, one man attempted to abduct a girl.

Rape
According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies, men raped at least five women in December 2019. This figure was nine last December.
One of the women had a mental disability. One of the incidents was revealed as the woman got pregnant as a result of rape.
Who raped two women was not reported in the news. While one woman was raped by an academic at university, one woman was raped by a relative and one woman by her husband.
The scenes of three incidents of rape were not reported in the press. Men raped two women at home.

Harassment
According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies, men harassed at least 28 women in December. Last December, this figure was 11. One of the women harassed by men was a citizen of Morocco.
While women did not know 17 men who harassed them, four women were harassed by three male passengers in the same minibus, one woman by a municipal police officer, one woman by the worker who came to her house, one woman by her son-in-law, one woman by her neighbor, one woman by a school principal and three women by their professors at university.
Men harassed 23 women physically/verbally. Harassing at least one woman by showing them their sex organs, they harassed one woman on social media/with message. Men harassed three women by videotaping.

Judicial process Only one of the perpetrators was arrested. Seven perpetrators were detained. Five perpetrators were released. Judicial control measures were imposed on two of them. Child abuse
Men sexually abused at least 32 children, including boys. This figure was nine in the same month last year.
The children did not know 15 men who abused them. Three children were abused by a school bus driver, one by his/her father, two were their employer, one by his/her school principal, two by their teachers, two by a municipal employee, three by a private security guard, two by a cleaning worker, and more than one children by an instructor at a Quran course.
One of the children was from Syria. Two girls were put under state protection. One girl was forced to sex work.
Men abused at least 20 children in public places such as schools, vicinity of a school, school bus, Quran course, and one child at home. Where men abused 11 children were not reported in the press.

Violence / Injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 74 women. This figure was 16 in the same month last year. Four of the women are still in critical condition.
Four perpetrators had restraining orders against them. At least two women were put in shelters. Four women were subjected to systematic violence. One man inflicted violence on a woman after getting out of prison. Men threatened three women in the provinces of Kütahya, Sivas and Edirne.

44 women were subjected to violence from their husbands/ex-husbands, 10 from their family members such as fathers, sons and brothers, two from their boyfriends, one from the driver of the vehicle she was riding in, one from a provincial executive of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), and one from her employer. The degree of the acquaintance of the men who inflicted violence on 15 women was not reported in the press.
Men's excuses for inflicting violence on 55 women were not reported in the press. Men inflicted violence on seven women because they did not want to make peace or wanted to divorce, six women for economic reasons, one woman because she asked a question, one woman because he did not like her, one woman because he did not like the breakfast she prepared, one woman because of jealousy, one woman because she did not perform prayer, one woman because forcing a woman to abortion.

Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
