The Directorate of Environmental Protection and National Parks (DKMP) announced yesterday (April 18) that demoiselle cranes were spotted in the Yedikır Dam Lake in Suluova, Amasya around the nest they newly built.
The Yedikır Dam Lake is in the area of responsibility of Region 11 in the crane monitoring and following works carried out by the directorate.
The demoiselle crane couple spotted first time in Amasya last year after a long break returned to the same place this year and built a nest.
In the Turkey Breeding Bird Survey including the records of bird spotters between 2014-2017 published in 2019, it was reported that there were no breeding demoiselle cranes left in Turkey. The other two species reported as having become extinct were the marbled teal and the velvet scoter.
The demoiselle crane couple and their eggs will be monitored closely in order for them not to have any problems.
The demoiselle cranes are expected to hatch their chicks soon. (TY/PE)
