The Syrian People's Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide, according to the state-run SANA news agency.
Before the vote, Rami Saleh, the secretary of the parliament, remarked that although the parliament had previously paid homage to the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims, it was necessary to adopt the resolution, the Armenpress reported.
With Syria, the number of countries that recognize Armenian Genocide have increased to 30 worldwide: Germany, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Armenia, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Lithuania, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Syria, Chile, Uruguay, Vatican, Venezuela, Greece.
In countries such as the US, Spain, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Australia, Iran and Israel, though the genocide is not officially recognized, there are regions and states that recognize it. There are 50 states in the US and 41 of them recognize the Armenian Genocide. The US Senate also passed a resolution recognizing the Genocide in December 2019.
The Council of Europe (CoE) and the European Parliament are among the institutions recognizing the genocide. (PT/VK)
