Kremlin Spokesperson Dimitry Peskov has said that US President Donald Trump's letter to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a "highly unusual language."
The letter was sent on October 9, the day Turkey began its military operation into northern Syria, and was revealed yesterday (October 16).
Threatening Erdoğan with "destroying Turkey's economy," Trump urged his counterpart not to be "a tough guy" and "not to be a fool."
"You don't often encounter such language in correspondence between heads of state. It's a highly unusual letter," Peskov told reporters.
"The situation in northeast Syria will be a very important topic on the agenda of talks between President Putin and President Erdoğan," Peskov noted.
Foreign Ministry of Russia: Damascus should control the border
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has said that the Syrian land bordering Turkey should be under the control of the Damascus government.
"We are convinced that achieving sustainable long-term stabilization and security in this region of Syria, in the country, and in the region as a whole, is possible only on the basis of the establishment, first of all, of its sovereignty, territorial integrity," Zakharova said.
"This means transferring, ultimately, to the control of the lawful Syrian government of all national territories, including the border with Turkey," she added. (PT/VK)
