Journalist Nurcan Yalçın has been sentenced to 3 years and 7 months in prison for "aiding an illegal organization" and "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."

She was indicted as part of an investigation into the Rosa Women's association. The prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of up to 22 years for the journalist.

The Diyarbakır 9th Heavy Penal Court today (November 22) sentenced Yalçın to 2 years 1 month in prison for "knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organization while not being a member of it" and 1 year, 6 months and 22 days for "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."

It deferred the announcment of the verdict for the "propaganda" crime.

What happened?

In October 2020, the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office indicted Nurcan Yalçın as part of an investigation into the Rosa Women's Association.

The prosecutor cited Yalçın's membership in the association and statements by anonymous witnesses as evidence of her alleged crimes.

An anonymous witness identified by the code "ZS35SN58UV52PG10" had told the Diyarbakır anti-terror police that "I know this person is a journalist and works for an agency that shares news about the [terrorist] organization in favor of the organization."
