An investigation for "provoking people into enmity and hatred" has been opened against Erman Paçalı, the chair of the HAYKURDER animal rights association over a social media post.
Reacting to a report about a man's release from detention after raping and killing a four-month-old dog, Paçalı addressed politicians, saying, "Don't you feel responsible?"
A man named Volkan Uzun was detained after raping the dog and was sent to prison as it was revealed that he was sought by the police because of committing nine different crimes. However, he wasn't initially remanded in custody for raping and killing the dog.
In Turkey, crimes against animals are considered a misdemeanor and often result in perpetrators receiving monetary penalties.
Having criticized lawmakers for not enacting an animal rights law, Paçalı is investigated for "provoking people into enmity and hatred."
After deposing at Silivri District Security Directorate in İstanbul, Paçalı said, "A pervert who raped and killed a four-month-old baby dog is among us. But I am who incites people into hatred, right? Was it me who released that pervert?"
"Those who open this investigation should think about who incited people into hatred. Unfortunately, some of the people in this country become aroused by children and animals," he added. (TP/VK)
