The flood disasters in Aksaray and Nevşehir provinces have resulted in loss of life.
The President of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), Okay Memiş, made a statement this morning regarding the flood in Aksaray.
Memiş, who announced that search and rescue operations are ongoing, provided the following information:
"Based on the information we received from the Meteorology General Directorate, we had issued warnings about the risky provinces nationwide. We had identified the possible risky areas for both yesterday and today. We had issued an orange alert for Samsun and its region and a yellow alert for Central Anatolia. While we were on our way from Hatay to intervene in the incident in Samsun, we received the notifications coming from Aksaray and Nevşehir. Our teams had to intervene in three unfortunate incidents in Aksaray."
3-month-old baby is missing
Okay Memiş mentioned that a baby is being searched for:
"We identified that the citizens in a village near the center were attempting to cross the road despite the current. Unfortunately, they were swept away by the water, and as a result of the flowing water, a lady in a vehicle was also swept away with her husband. We reached the body of the lady.
In another vehicle, the husband and wife managed to save themselves, but their 3-month-old baby was swept away by the water. Our search efforts for the missing baby are ongoing."
Vehicle rolled into the creek
Memiş mentioned that during the search operations, a vehicle also rolled into a creek.
He continued: "We attach great importance to the notifications we receive and continue search and rescue activities on a 24-hour basis. AFAD, under the coordination of the Aksaray Governorate, led the coordination of search and rescue operations. We are in the field with 150 people, including Aksaray Municipality, Provincial Special Administration, UMKE, gendarmerie, and police teams. Our efforts to find the missing baby and to take measures according to the notifications will continue."
Two people lost their lives in Nevşehir
Two people lost their lives in the severe rainfall and flooding in Gülşehir district of Nevşehir.
Search operations conducted by the gendarmerie and AFAD teams revealed a vehicle swept away by floodwaters, and the teams reached the bodies inside the vehicle. (AS/PE)
