Buğday (Wheat) Association announced that 6 more harmful agricultural pesticides have been banned, bringing the total number of banned active substances in the last 13 years to 223. This comes under the campaign called "Toxic-Free Tables" initiated by the association. During the campaign, the number of banned pesticide active substances reached 37, and the number of signatures collected surpassed 182,000.
These agricultural pesticides, also known as agrochemicals or plant protection products, were banned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry due to their high risk to humans, the environment, and other living organisms. The pesticides Desmedipham, Dimethioate, Ethoprophos, Linuron, Imidacloprid, and Thiamethoxam were highlighted by the Toxic-Free Tables Platform for their hazardous effects.
Research indicates that over 90% of pesticides used in agriculture do not reach their intended targets, but instead contaminate the air, water, and soil.
The Buğday Association outlined the reasons provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for banning pesticide active substances:
* The presence of carcinogenic effects in pesticides.
* Identification as endocrine disruptors.
* Incomplete toxicological and ecotoxicological studies
* High risk to birds.
* Incomplete environmental exposure and risk assessments, including groundwater.
* Causing colony-wide bee deaths due to poisoning of bees.
* The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of pesticides to human health and the environment while advocating for safer and more sustainable agricultural practices.
