Turkey among top 10 countries in the world in lung cancer frequency rate

Turkey ranks ninth in the world in lung cancer frequency rate with 36.9 per 100,000 people, according to a report by the Turkish Lung Cancer Association (TAKD).

The country has a higher incidence for men with 70.6 per 100,000 people, which is only surpassed by Hungary and Serbia.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men with 22 percent and the second-most fatal cancer after breast cancer for women with 13.8 percent.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two million people were diagnosed with lung cancer (11.6 percent of all cancer types) in the world in 2018.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer type in Turkey and needs a multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and treatment, said Prof. Erdem Göker, the chair of the association. (RT/VK)
