According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men killed at least 34 women and raped 11 women in Turkey in August 2021.

In Mardin, men threatened a woman with "killing" or "inflicting violence." In Ankara, Eda Nur Kaplan was driven to suicide. In Balıkesir and Eskişehir, two women exercised their right of self-defense.
2021 - 2020 In the first eight months of 2021, men killed 208 women, harassed 106 women, abused 98 children and raped 73 women. Men's "excuses" for killing 24 women were not reported in the news. Previous feminicides and suspicious deaths reported in the press in August On July 9, Hediye D. (38) was found dead at home in Kastamonu province. It was alleged that she was "shot" by mistake while she was cleaning the hunting rifle of her husband İ.D. The man was taken into custody. On July 11, Şeyma M. was found dead at home in Sivas. It was alleged that "the weapon of her relative and police officer M.M. went off for an unknown reason", the bullet ricocheted and shot the woman in the chest. In Tekirdağ, Neşe Ö. (45) lost her life by falling off the balcony of the apartment for an unknown reason on July 11. |
Murder of children
In August, men killed at least six children. Last August, this number was four. Men also battered at least four children in the provinces of İstanbul, Kocaeli, Edirne and Van in August 2021.

Sexual assault / Rape
In August 2021, men raped at least 11 women. Last August, the number of women raped by men was 13. Two of the 11 women raped by men in Turkey in August 2021 had mental disabilities.
One woman was raped by her grandfather, one woman was raped by her friend, one woman was raped by her relative, one woman was raped by a bus attendant in the bus where she was travelling and three women were raped by their husbands/boyfriends. The degree of acquaintance between four women and the sexual assaulters was not reported in the press.
Men raped four women inside the house and seven women in places outside the house such as a forestland, workplace and bus.

Harassment
Men harassed at least 28 women in August. This figure was 21 in the same month last year.
13 women did not know the 13 men who harassed them. 12 women were harassed by their bosses, two women by their colleagues and one woman by a doctor.

Child abuse
Men abused at least 13 girls and boys in August. This figure was 20 in the same month last year.
One of the cases of abuse was revealed after the child was impregnated. Men had been systematically abusing at least three children. One of the children was taken under protection.
Five children were abused by their fathers, one child by their teacher and men from their family. The degree of acquaintance between seven children and the men who harassed them was not reported in the press.

Men inflicted violence on at least 61 women in August. This figure was 122 in the same month last year.
Seven women who were subjected to violence from men were hospitalized in a "serious" condition. Men had been systematically violent with at least five women.

At least 44 women were injured by their husbands, boyfriends, ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends. One woman was subjected to violence from her son-in-law, two women from their neighbors, four women from their family members such as fathers and sons. The degree of acquaintance between 11 women and the 16 men who inflicted violence on them was not reported in the press.
Men inflicted violence on 14 women because they "wanted to break up or did not want to make peace," one woman because "she fed a cat" and one woman because "she wanted to stay in the pool." Men's excuses for inflicting violence on 45 women were not reported in the press.
Men injured 49 women by battering them, eight women with firearms and at least four women with sharp objects.

Men forced at least 20 women to sex work in August. This figure was 50 in the same month last year.
14 women who were forced to sex work were not citizens of Turkey. There were also children among those who were forced to sex work.

Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
