The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) brought online broadcasts under its authority as of September 1. Accordingly, online broadcasters have to acquire a license from the RTÜK to operate in Turkey.
Several on-demand platforms, such as Netflix, Blu TV, and Puhu TV, applied to the RTÜK for a license.
While there was curiosity about how the RTÜK will supervise online broadcasting and if on-demand platforms will censor their content, Netflix apparently applied censorship for the first time in Turkey.
In the global version trailer of "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie", a follow-up to the renowned series "Breaking Bad", a man in a car is seen with a cigarette in his hand. However, he does not have a cigarette in the version for Turkey.
Here is the uncensored global version of the trailer:
And the trailer that was aired in Turkey:
Netflix released a statement after the censorship on the movie trailer was widely discussed on social media, saying that it may edit movie trailers in many countries in case they include sensitive footage.
It added that Netflix users in Turkey will be able to watch the movie as of October 11 without any "change or cut."
Netflix said it edits trailers because people who do not prefer to watch the content can also see them while "browsing productions that will come to Netflix with their families".
What happened?Online broadcasting organizations were taken under the inspection of the RTÜK as of September 1. According to the "Regulation on Radio, Television and Voluntary Online Broadcasts" published on the Official Gazette today (August 1), online broadcasting platforms are obliged to get a license from the RTÜK. These websites will also have to establish a company and pay taxes in Turkey so that they can continue operating in the country. The objective of the new legal regulation has been explained as follows in the Official Gazette: "The objective of this regulation is to establish procedures and principles as to the online broadcast and transmission of radio, television and voluntary broadcasting services; the broadcasting licenses to be granted to media service providers and the authority of broadcast transmission to be given to platform operators, and the inspection of the related broadcasts." |
