The Constitutional Court has annulled a presidential decree changing the criterion for being a member of the Central Bank Assembly.
The top court gave the judgment by a majority vote on March 18 and the justified decision was published yesterday (June 23).
The decree published in May 2020 says, "The duty of a lecturer at state universities subject to the Law on Higher Education Staff can be combined with the duty of a member of the Assembly of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey."
Shortly after the publication of the decree, Prod. Elif Haykır-Hobikoğlu, the daughter of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy Mustafa Haykır, was picked for the Central Bank Assembly membership.
Also an academic at İstanbul University, Haykır-Hobikoğlu was appointed as a member of the Central Bank Monetary Policy Committee in April.
Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputies had taken the decree to the top court. (KÖ/VK)
