In a statement issued today (September 4), Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the US and its allies of helping Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Al Nusra front.
The statement issued by the ministry read, “It’s clear as day that the US and its allies have been sending a huge quantity of armament and weapon to Nusra front and ISIS via Ukraine, Eastern European countries and the Balkan states”.
Turkey designated Tahrir al-Sham a terrorist group. Russia and Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s forces had signaled a potential operation showing the group as cause of the operation.
Tension between Russia and the US
The statement came a week after increasing number of statements made by Russia and the US.
US President Trump tweeted, “President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!"
In the wake of Russian airstrike on Idlib, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin’s Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov in response to Trump said, “Making some warnings without paying attention to the very dangerous, negative potential for the situation in Syria in general is probably not a complete, not a comprehensive approach”.
