High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini’s letter she wrote to Astana process’ guarantor countries Turkey, Russia and Iran about the ceasefire deal, which passed on February 24 at the UN Security Council but is not applied in practice, has come to light.
“Militaristic tension in Syria should stop”
In her letter written for the ministers of foreign affairs of the three countries, Mogherini called on them to “implement a true humanitarian ceasefire to last at least 30 days in Syria nationwide”.
The EU representative urged the countries to take all necessary steps to protect people of Syria and to ensure emergent humanitarian aid reach the country.
Stressing the de-conflict zone agreed during Astana process, the letter read, “We believe that all efforts must be spread for militaristic tension to end in Syria”.
Putin’s order hasn’t changed anything
In Eastern Ghouta where government of Syria has intensified its attacks, the deal stipulating five-hour ceasefire entered into force by Russia’s call yesterday (February 28).
However, the humanitarian ceasefire planned to be ensure by Putin’s order also didn’t help the evacuation of the civilians. (PT/TK)
