Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Martin Schaefer has said that the decision leading to a crisis between Germany and Turkey to cancel Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ's speech was taken at a local level.
Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel had also explained that only local authorities had the competence to decide whether politicians from Turkey could run campaigns in Germany.
Gabriel had informed that neither the federal government nor the federal state administrations had the authority to decide whether an assembly could take place in a way which would not endanger public security.
What happened?
The permission granted for the meeting in which Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ would give a speech regarding the constitutional amendment referendum this night in Gaggenau province in Baden-Württemberg state of Germany was cancelled.
The reason for the cancellation was announced as lack of capacity of the hall.
About the arrest of journalist Deniz Yücel, Bozdağ had said "It is the decision of the independent courts".
The meeting had drawn reactions
Bozdağ's planned visit to Germany drew reactions from various parties' administrators as well as social media users. (YY/DG)
