Russia's Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was subjected to an armed attack today (December 19) during his speech at a painting exhibition in Çağdaş Sanatlar Merkezi (Contemporary Arts Center) in Ankara. It was stated that Karlov heavily injured was taken to a hospital.
"Today, Russia's Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov lost his life due to the injuries he got resulted from an assault. We deem this incident as a terror act", Zakharova said.
Russia-based news agency RIA also reported that Karlov is dead.
Turkey has yet to make any statement as to the incident.
Syrian summit will be held in Moscow tomorrow
Speaking to Interfax agency, parliament's lower wing Duma's international relations committee Chair Leonid Slutsky announced that the summit, which would host minister of defense and foreign affairs of Turkey, Russia and Iran, will be organized as planned in Moscow.
The attack won't affect Turkey-Russia relations, Slutskiy said in his talk he made on Rossiya 24 TV.
About Andrey Karlov
Born in Moscow in 1954, Karlov Andrey Gennadyevich was educated at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Diplomatic Academy.
He began his career with the government at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR in 1976.
He went on to hold various diplomatic positions at the Russian embassy to North Korea.
Mr Karlov has been Russian ambassador to Turkey since July 2013. (ÇT/TK)
