President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russia’s Leader Vladimir Putin have spoken on the phone about the Syrian war and a truce in Aleppo.
A Kremlin statement was carried on the Sputnik news website::
“The situation in Syria was tackled during the phone meeting. It was decided that we would sustain active contacts through various channels with the purpose of coordinating efforts for a solution”.
The Feast of Sacrifice agreement
The state-run Anadolu Agency, citing the Presidency, reported that Erdoğan stressed the importance of establishing a truce in Aleppo as soon as possible.
Ongoing talks with the United States to establish a truce in Aleppo were also discussed in the meeting, and it was agreed that efforts towards that goal must be intensified.
Reuters, citing Presidential sources, reported that Putin and Erdoğan agreed on increasing the efforts to achieve truce in Aleppo before the Feast of Sacrifice.
Syrian operation
The two leaders also discussed Turkey’s Euphrates Shield operation.
Erdoğan and Putin came to an agreement on “cleansing Turkey’s border of organizations -- especially DAESH (also known as ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria)”.
Both leaders also said that they were pleased with the acceleration of normalization of bilateral relations and that the issues which were agreed upon in St. Petersburg and China have been rapidly actualized. (AS/TK)
