A wall is being built on Turkish-Syrian border in Kuşaklı village of Reyhanlı town in the southern province of Hatay.
According to the various newspapers, the wall that is supposed to “prevent border violations and smuggling” is 30 centimeters wide and 3 meters high.
The wall that is planned to be 1200 meters long will weigh nine tons in total when complete.
Turkish-Syrian border is approximately 900 kilometers. This construction also took place in some points at Atme town in the border.
So far, 150 concrete blocks have been put in position since the works started two days ago in Kuşaklı village. Ready-mixed concrete walls can be moved and transferred when needed.
Nusaybin Mayor Ayşe Gökkan was also among the ones who staged a hunger strike against the wall between Mardin-Kamışlı. Gökkan’s hunger strike is stopped after the meetings when the wall is built.
Not the first “border wall”
Greece also built a wall of approximately 10 kilometers on Turkish border to prevent immigrants. According to the Voice of Russia, the construction started in 2011 and ended in December 2012. An approximation of 6 thousand cubic meters of concrete, 800 tons of steel and wired barbs were used.
There is a wall of 1123 kilometers in Mexico to prevent access to the U.S. The wall is also under surveillance with cameras. Despite all this, border crossing are still present.
Israel named the Western Bank wall (construction started in 2004) “security line” after the Second Intifada. The wall, which will be 708 kilometers when finished, isolates the Palestinians from the world.
