Several women including Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chair Özlem Gümüştaş, ESP Socialist Women's Assemblies (SKM) Spokesperson Hatice Deniz Aktaş and SKM Central Executive Board members were detained in Turkey's western province of Balıkesir yesterday (July 26).
Speaking to Mezopotamya Agency, attorneys of the women have indicated that the home of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Edremit District Co-Chair Sevgi Özden was raided by special operation teams at around 2.50 a.m. and women's computers and phones have been seized by the police.
Stating that their clients went to Balıkesir to both discuss the recent political developments and issues concerning women such as İstanbul Convention and to take a vacation there, the attorneys have also said that the detained women have been given four days as detention period.
According to initial reports, ESP Co-Chair Özlem Gümüştaş, SKM Spokesperson Hatice Deniz Aktaş, SKM Central Executive Board members Çiçek Otlu, Satiye Ok, Züleyha Mangan, Ezgi Bahçeci, Tanya Kara, Ebru Yiğit and HDP Edremit Co-Chair Sevgi Özdem are in detention. (RT/SD)
