Turkey ranked 130th out of 153 countries in the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Gender Gap Index 2020. It stood at the same place in last year's index.
Turkey ranked 136th in economic participation and opportunity, 13th in educational attainment, 106th in the wage gap, 64th in health and survival, and 109th in political empowerment in the 2020 index.
1 point means full equality in the index. While Iceland, Norway and Sweden were the closest countries to full equality, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Yemen were farthest ones.
The WEF also has a "Gender Gap Calculator," which enables people to see the situation in their countries. According to the calculator, a 30-year-old woman in Turkey would be 196 years old when the country achieved complete equality. For every single US dollar the woman earns, a man earns 2.27 dollars.
Women also trail behind men in participation in the labor force (33.46 percent compared to 76.51 percent) and in literacy rate (92.9 percent compared to 98.65 percent). However, a woman in Turkey can expect to live 67.00 years in good health as compared to 63.00 years for a man, according to the calculator.
