According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies, in the second month of 2019, men killed at least 23 women and one man who was with the woman when she was killed.
One of the women killed in February 2019 was from Iraq, one of them was from Palestine and another one from Afghanistan. In the second month of 2019, men raped at least two women and harassed at least six women.
The news compiled by bianet have also shown that in February 2019, men abused 15 girls and injured at least 25 women. Men also forced at least 62 women to sex work.
Moreover, the deaths of two women in the provinces of Ankara and Aydın were reported in the news as "suspicious". Men also threatened two women with death if they break up with them.
While three killed women were reported in the news as "unidentified murders", it was found in February 2019 that the murder of Shakila Qudusi (38) from Afghanistan and her children Navid (8) and Maryam (3) was committed by the husband A.Q. (28) on January 27, 2019.
Men also attempted to kill two women in İstanbul and Bursa. As of March 8, 2019, both women were still in critical condition.

Men killed seven women "because they wanted to divorce or did not accept reconciliation." Men killed one woman "because she socialized", four women in a dispute for "inheritance" and one woman on the pretext of "jealousy." Men killed one woman after mugging her. The pretexts of men for nine femicides were not reported in the news.
Men killed 11 of the women at home and eight of them in public places (forestland, street, in front of the house, cargo company). It was not reported in the news where men killed four women.
Nine women were killed by their husbands, four women by their ex-husbands, two women by their ex-sons-in-law, two women by their brothers-in-law, one woman by her father, one woman by her brother, one woman by a relative of her husband, two women by four male strangers and one woman by her two male neighbors.
Men killed 13 women with firearms such as pistols and rifles, six women with knives and two women by strangling them. It was not reported in the news how men killed two women.
Judicial process In February 2019, women were killed by 30 male perpetrators. Nine perpetrators were detained; while seven of the detained were released, one of them was released on probation. The legal status of two perpetrators was reported in the news as "giving themselves over to the police", the status of four of them as "caught", one of them as "having escaped". Four perpetrators were arrested. One perpetrator committed suicide. The judicial process of one perpetrator was not reported in the news. |
Rape
In February 2019, men raped at least two women. Last February, men raped at least nine women. One of the raped women was not a citizen of Turkey.

One of the women was raped by a male stranger. Another woman attempted to be raped by her two neighbors.
One of the incidents of rape took place at home and the other one in a ferry.
Judicial process There were three male perpetrators in total. While one of the perpetrators was taken into custody, one of them was released and the other one was arrested. |
Forced sex work
In February 2019, men forced 62 women to sex work. Last February, 147 women were forced to do sex work by men.

57 of the women who were forced to do sex work in February were not citizens of Turkey. While three women were from Uzbekistan, two women were from Turkey.
Judicial process There were 54 perpetrators in total. 48 of them were arrested. Six of them were released. While 20 perpetrators were interrogated at the security directorate, the results of the interrogations were not reported in the news. |
Harassment
Men harassed at least six women in February. This number was seven for February 2018.
One incident happened on social media, the other five were incidents of physical and verbal harassment.
Women did not know two of the perpetrators. One woman was harassed by her sister's husband, one by a police officer, one by a hospital manager, and one by a relative.

Judicial process There were six perpetrators. Not any action was taken against the police officer and the hospital manager. An investigation was launched against one perpetrator. Child abuse
Men abused at least 15 girls in February. In the last February, 18 girls were abused by men.
Two girls were abused by men whom they do not know, one by the owner of a market she went as a customer, 10 by their teachers and one by a man whom she met on social media.
Men abused 11 girls at school, one at a market, one on social media, one in a public bus.

Violence, Injury
Men injured at least 25 women in February. For February 2018, this number was 26.
One was a trans woman, one was not a citizen of Turkey, one was a citizen of the UK and one was a citizen of Ukraine. At least three women were injured heavily.
Men also used violence against two dogs, which were with the women at the time of the incidents.
In two cases, violence caused more violence
In Siirt province, H.S (54) battered his wife, whom he systematically applied violence against. The couple's daughter S.S. (16), who was at home at the time, intervened in and shot at H.S. with a pistol. H.S. lost his life after being heavily wounded, S.S. was detained.
In Antalya, D.Y. tried to break into L.U.'s home, refusing to go away. L.U. shot at D.Y. with a rifle from the window of her home. D.Y. was killed, Y.U. turned herself into the gendarmerie officers who came to the home after the incident.

Eight women were subjected to violence by their husbands, seven by men whom they do not know, one by her brother, one by her husband, whom she married in an unofficial religious ceremony.
Out of 25 women, at least two were attacked with knives. Five were systematically subjected to violence by men.
Men battered at least 13 women at home, at least 10 in public places such as streets or inside a vehicle. Places of at least two incidents were not covered on the media.
A woman who is a citizen of the UK left Turkey because of the violence by her husband.
Judicial process One perpetrator was banned from coming close to the woman. An injunction was issued against one perpetrator. One perpetrator was killed by the woman whom he battered, and one was killed by the daughter of the woman whom he battered. Five perpetrators were arrested. Seven were detained. Not any action was taken against at least three perpetrators. One was reported as "fled" on the media." |
Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
