Women in Prison Network was in Ankara yesterday (November 1) to convey its campaign, which has been launched for women in prison to be provided free pad, to politicians and professional chambers.
Speaking to bianet, lawyer Ezgi Duman said that Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Human Rights Commission member and Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP Mehmet Metiner promised them saying “Consider this issue solved”.
Formed by rights organizations, Women in Prison Network stated that women being provided free hygienic pad is directly linked with right to health, and has launched a campaign in accordance with this demand in June 2017.
Going to Ankara for the campaign, the women met with TBMM Human Rights Commission, Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK), Bar Association of Turkey, Turkish Medical Association (TTB), and MPs from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Lawyer Duman said that TİHEK has difficulties in seeing the relation between right to free pad and human rights, and they received the response that “Let us study it first, and then meet if it’s really a right violation”.
“It was very positive that a government representative giving promise. What is really important is the upcoming period. We were promised by the policy makers but we will continue to monitor how it will be solved and how it will be practiced”. (ÇT/TK)
