Various protests have been organized in İstanbul and Balıkesir’s Ayvalık district to act in solidarity with Ayşegül Terzi, who was hit by a man on a bus for wearing shorts on the first day of the Eid.
“Wear your shorts and come to Kartal” call by Beşiktaş fan group çArşı
Upon the call of Beşiktaş fan group çArşı with the slogan “wear your shorts and come to Kartal*”, a large number of people rallied in front of the Eagle Statue in İstanbul’s Beşiktaş district.
Leaflets were distributed reading, “For women not to be slaughtered in the middle of the street or attacked for their belief, religion, race…Everyone need to respect each other, a livable country can be established with a common language”.
Bicycle tour in Ayvalık
According to a report by the ETHA news agency, Independent Women Initiative has organized Ayvalık Women in Shorts Bicycle Tour.
Initiative representative Piraye Bayman made a statement on behalf of the women who gathered in front of Ayvalık Teacher’s House. Noting that they held the bicycle tour in support of women who are exposed to harassment and violence said, “We are saying ‘we wear shorts or miniskirts, it is not anyone’s business. We can walk around anywhere at any time we please”.
13 women rider joined the tour that began following the statement. (EA/TK)
