According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 23 women/teenager girls killed, 8 raped, 47 injured, and 12 sexually harassed in September 2014.
Overall in 2014, male perpetrators left 207 women killed, 78 raped, 464 battered and 89 sexually harassed.
Murder
In September, men killed 23 women, 5 children and 7 men (related to male violence on women) across Turkey.
Prior to the incidents, 17.3 percent of perpetrators benefited from either a prison leave, judiciary control measures or parole.
8.7 of women were killed despite a court restraint order. 13 percent were killed for seeking divorce or turning down a compromise proposal from a husband. 8.7 percent were killed for turning down a relationship proposal.
48.7 percent of women were killed by their husbands. Murder perpetrator men were identified as husband (11), family (1), lover (2), harasser (1), ex-husband (1), co-worker (1), fiancee (1), son-in-law (1), brother (1) and man with turned down proposal (2).
While 56.5 percent of murders were perpetrated by guns. Murders were committed by the following methods: knife (7), gun (10), rifle (3) strangling (2), pushed from the window (1).
Following the murders, three men committed suicide himself, two men attempted to commit suicide, and 1 surrendered to the law enforcement officials.
The murderers were aged between 17 to 54 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 16 to 55.
Most murder cases were reported mostly in Istanbul. Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Ankara (2), Antep (2), Denizli, Diyarbakır, Eskişehir, Gümüşhane, İstanbul (5), İzmir, Kayseri, Manisa, Mersin (2), Muş, Ordu and Urfa.
Rape
In September, men raped 8 women and according to news sources, only 2 were arrested.
Rapes were committed in the following venues: On the street (37.5 percent), abduction venues (25 percent), apartment (25 percent) and office (12.5 percent).
Rape perpetrator men were identified as ex-husband (1), lover (1), ex-lover (1), cyber friend (1), family friend (1), server (1), co-worker (1), stranger (1).
The rapists were aged between 19 to 55 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 12 to 30.
Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Antalya, Aydın, Denizli, İstanbul (2), İzmir and Kütahya.
Battery/Assault
In September, men battered 47 women and teenager girls across Turkey.
12.7 percent of women were battered for either seeking divorce or attempting to break up from a lover.
Another woman was battered for refusing to divorce her husband.
57.4 percent of women were subjected to male violence by their husbands (27). Other violence perpetrators included: lover (6), ex-husband (3), stranger (3), son (2), server (2), father (1) and relative (1).
23 percent of the male violence cases took place with the method of knives and guns. 35 women were battered, 7 were injured with a knife, 3 with a rifle and 1 with a pistol. One man casted a molotov cocktail to his wife’s apartment.
The male aggressors were aged between 19 to 76 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 19 to 71.
Battery/Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (6), Antalya (5), Antep, Aydın, Bolu (4), Bursa (2), Çorum, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Erzurum (2), Hakkari, İstanbul (3), İzmir, Kayseri (6),Kocaeli, Malatya, Manisa, Mersin, Muğla (2), Rize, Samsun (2), Tekirdağ, Urfa and Van.
Harassment
In September, 12 sexual harassment cases appeared in the media.
66 percent of the women were harassed by men they didn’t know. Other perpetrators included neighbor (2), schoolmate (3), acquaintance (3), stranger (4).
Harassment venues/platforms included apartment (2), on the street (3), school (3) and over the phone (2). Two men reportedly wrote “Nightly fee 1 lira and 1 pack of cigarettes” to a shop window.
Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Adana, Aydın (3), Bolu (4), Isparta and Kırşehir (3).
Retaliation to male violence
In September, 2 retaliation to male violence cases were reported across Turkey.
While a woman killed her violent husband in Antalya, another woman killed her violent brother-in-law in Konya.
Regional distribution
In September 2014, 93 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 34 provinces across Turkey.
Mediterranean was rated as the most violent in September 2014. 93 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (14), Aegean (15), Mediterranean (20), Black Sea (14), Eastern-Anatolia (7), Central Anatolia (13) and South-Eastern Anatolia (10). (ÇT/BM)
