According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 29 women killed, 6 women raped, 55 women injured, and 7 women sexually harassed in April 2014.
Overall in 2014, male perpetrators left 89 women killed, 19 raped, 200 battered and 19 harassed.
Murder
Men killed 29 women in 20 provinces.
One of the killers was a retired policeman, another one a retired prison guard. A man killed his ex-wife after he was probated.
One of four murdered women in April either filed a complaint or had a restraining order. One was placed in shelter.
31 percent of women were murdered for rejecting marriage/reconciliation.
72 percent of women were slain by their husbands or their lovers: 13 were murdered by husbands, five by boyfirends, three by ex-husbands, two by sons-in-law, one by male relative, one by father, one by neighbor. Two women were murdered during an attack intended for their fathers/husbands. A trans sex worker was also murdered by a customer.
69 percent of murders were perpetrated by guns: 13 with guns, 8 with rifles, three with knives, two with beating, one with starngling, two with throat-slitting.
Three men surrendered to the law enforcement after the incident; seven committed suicide after the incident.
The most violent province was marked Antep, of whom former Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Şahin now governs as mayor. The murder cases in April took place in following cities: Adana (3), Ankara, Antep (4), Balıkesir, Bursa, Çorum, Denizli (2), Edirne, Eskişehir, Hatay, İstanbul (4), İzmir, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Konya, Malatya, Mersin, Muğla, Tokat and Zonguldak.
A man was murdered trying to stop two men attacking a woman with a knife, another was murdered trying to stop those who harassed his wife. Two gendarmery soldiers were murdered by a man who battered and threatened his wife.
Rape
In April, 6 rape cases from 6 provinces were covered by the media.
One of the rape victims was a tourist, another a refugee. A house worker was also raped.
50 percent of rapes took place on the street, 50 percent of the perpetrators were unknown men and 33 percent were lovers.
Three women were raped on the Street, one at work and one at home. Media didn’t cover the place of one rape case.
The rape suspects were aged between 16 to 86 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 13 to 21 in April.
Rape cases have been reported from the following cities: Ankara, Antalya, Aydın, İstanbul, Samsun and Tekirdağ.
Battery - Assauly
Men battered 55 women in 20 provinces in April.
14,5 of women were battered for seeking divorce. Two women were battered for filing a complaint over the previous battering.
11 percent women were battered despite protection. A woman was battered with a cleaver after the prosecutor said “He loves you.”
In April, 49 percent of the perpetrators were husbands, 9 percent were ex-husband, ex-lover and ex-fiancee: 27 women were battered by their husbands, four by their sons, four by men they don’t know, three by ex-husbands, three by their fathes, two by their neighbors, two by their customers, two by their mother’s boyfriends, one by relative, one by friend, one by husband's friend, one by ex-fiancee, one by ex-lover, one by valet, one by co-worker, and one by boyfriend.
60 percent of women were battered; 27 percent with knife, 9 percent with a gun. Two women were burned with boiling water and gasoline.
While violence perpetrators were aged between 20 and 74, violence victims were aged between 12 and 79.
Male violence were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Adıyaman, Balıkesir (2), Batman, Bolu (3), Bursa (4), Çorum (7), Diyarbakır (2), İstanbul (8), İzmir (4), Kayseri (2), Kocaeli (6), Konya, Manisa, Mersin (2), Muğla, Osmaniye (2), Samsun (2), Trabzon (3) and Urfa.
Harassment
In April, 7 harassment cases from 6 provinces were covered by the media.
Three cases took place on the street, one over the phone, two at home, one on a vehicle, and one in a service area.
3 women were harassed by men they don’t know, one by relative, one by her employer, one by her brother and one by her teacher
Harassment perpetrators were aged between 35 and 58; Harassed victims were aged between 12 and 30.
Harassment cases have been reported from the following cities: Antalya, Bandırma, İstanbul (2), Trabzon, Uşak and Zonguldak.
Regional Distribution
In April, 97 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 34 provinces across Turkey.
Marmara and Karadeniz region marked as the most violent regions. 97 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (33), Aegean (12), Mediterranean (13), Black Sea (21), Eastern-Anatolia (1), Central Anatolia (8) and South-Eastern Anatolia (9). (ÇT/BAR/BM)
