According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 23 women killed, 6 raped, 45 injured and 5 harassed in January 2014.
While 26 percent of women were slain for seeking divorce, 17 percent were killed in the name of honor. 3 women were killed despite protection orders.
On the other hand, 15.5 percent of women were either battered or assaulted for seeking divorce.
It was also striking that retaliation to male violence cases surged in January 2014 with 4 women killing their husbands who systematically battered them. Various courts had issued restraint orders against three of those slain husbands.
In 2013, male perpetrated violence left 214 women and 10 children dead, 167 women and teenager girls raped or failed to rape, and 161 women or teenager girls harassed.
Murder
In January, men killed 23 women and 3 men in 17 cities across Turkey.
While 48 percent of women were killed by their husbands. Murder perpetrators in January included husband (11), brother (3), ex-lover (2), ex—husband (1), turned down man (1), family members (2), thief (1) and harasser (1).
65 percent of murders were perpetrated by guns. Murders were committed by the following methods: pistol (8), rifle (7), knife (4), by strangling (3) and electricity (1).
Following the incidents, 22 percent of men committed suicide (5), 17 percent surrendered to the police (4).
The Turkish state failed to protect women once again: 3 women were slain despite protection orders.
One murder perpetrator had previously been acquitted of battery. While one woman was murdered before the courthouse, another woman was murdered in front of prison (by a harasser).

2 male perpetrators were policemen and another was working in private security.
The murderers were aged between 18 to 82 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 14 to 74 in January 2014.
Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Antalya, Aydın (2), Balıkesir, Diyarbakır (2), Erzurum, Hatay, Isparta, İstanbul (2), İzmir, Kars, Kırşehir, Konya (2), Manisa, Mersin, Siirt and Urfa (3).
Rape
In January, only 6 rape cases were covered by the media.
Rape venues in January were listed as follows: apartment (3), car (1), office (1) and abduction house (1).
All rapists were acquintances to women. Rapists were identified as friend (2), ex-lover (1), co-worker (1), fiancee (1) and village guard (1).
One teenager girl (14) was raped by the man (33) whom she was forced to marry. However, the man was acquitted even though he was charged with rape and marrying minors.
The rapists were aged between 18 to 40 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 12 to 21 in January 2014.
Rape cases have been reported from the following cities: Bartın, Dersim, İstanbul, Kocaeli and Samsun (2).
Battery-Assault
In January, men battered 45 women in 16 cities across Turkey.
75.5 percent of women were subjected to violence by their husbands.
Violence perpetrators in January included husband (34), lover (4), ex—husband (2), ex-lover (1), father (1), son (1), son-in-law (1) and fiancee (1).
15.5 percent of women were battered for seeking divorce (7) and 2 were battered honor.
While one man assaulted his wife with a knife after they left the divorce hearing, another man assaulted his brother-in-law with a knife after being detained and released for battering his wife.
Violence methods in January included battery (35), knife (7) rifle (1), setting on fire (1) and throw acid (1).
While violence perpetrators were aged between 20 and 50, violence victims were aged between 18 and 48.
Violence cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (4), Ağrı, Aksaray, Batman, Burdur, Bursa (2), Çorum (2), Erzurum (4), İstanbul (4), Kayseri, Kocaeli (14), Mersin (4), Sakarya (2), Samsun, Tokat and Trabzon (2).
Harassment
In January, only 4 harassment cases appeared on the media.
The venues of harassment cases was listed as follows:on the street (2), student residence and office.
The cases were reported in the following cities: Antalya, Aydın, Diyarbakır, İstanbul.
3 men were detained in Istanbul during NYE celebrations.
While 3 cases were perpetrated by strangers, 1 case was committed by a boss.
Retaliation to male violence
In January, seven retaliation to male violence cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Kastamonu, İzmir, Sakarya, Tekirdağ and Zonguldak.
4 women killed their husbands who systematically battered them. Various courts had issued restraint orders against three of those slain husbands.
One woman murdered her husband who broke into her apartment despite protection order and threatened her and her family.
Another woman was raped at the age of 15 and forced to marry her husband. She reportedly said that she filed several complaints for violence and her husband was released within judiciary control measures.
While one man assaulted another man who harassed, another man assaulted his violence brother-in-law.
Regional distribution
In January 2014, 79 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 31 provinces across Turkey.
Marmara region marked as the most violent region. Kocaeli topped as the most violent city.
