Beşiktaş football team fans will do the first silent cheer of the world in the game against Portugal’s Benfica today (November 23).
The fans will cheer in sign language with the starting whistle as “No to racism” and “Black Eagle”.
Beşiktaşk wants to draw attention to racism as well as persons having impaired hearing. Benfica also urged its fans to join this silent action.
The ratio of people who cannot hear is 1.1%
According to data by Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the ratio of people who cannot hear or can barely hear despite using hearing aid/implant is 1.1%. The ratio of people who state that they have serious difficulty in hearing is 3.7%.
Republican People’s Party (CHP) Ankara MP Aylin Nazlıaka had submitted a law draft proposing that sign language be included in primary education curriculum as a mandatory course. (NV/TK)
