In a joint statement, Anatolian Arab Union Foundation, Mardin Assyrian Union Foundation, Şemikan People and Beliefs Foundation, Mhalammi Foundation, Mesopotamia Universal Living Movement and Yasidi Culture Sustenance Platform have declared their support for Republican People’s Party (CHP) Vice Chair and Spokesperson Selin Sayek Böke who had been targeted by Bugün daily over being “a Christian”.
In the statement it has been pointed out that a hate crime had been committed against Böke and the newspaper in question Bugün daily has been condemned which had used the headline “Böke did not respond to the question whether she was a christian. She turns out to have been baptized”.
In the joint statement it has been noted; “A hate crime has been committed against Böke in particular and us in general belonging to different ethical and belief groups and our identities have been targeted.
“We who are members of different ethical and belief groups have been made open targets. This situation spreads hate between persons and put the lives of the ones shown as targets in danger”.
Legal action
In the statement, it has also been demanded taking legal action against the ones committing the hate crime and noted;
“ [...] We condemn this crime committed against Böke in particular and us Assyrian, Mhalammi, Arab, Şemikan, Kurdish, Christian, Yasidi people in general for the sake of protecting this life we have created together and demand taking legal actions against the committers of this crime immediately”.
Call for Peace
“[...] Besides, we call for putting an end to this environment of war which has gotten out of hand lately and would like to point out that providing peace which which embraces all people from different ethical and belief groups living on these grounds is an urgent necessity”. (YY/DG)
