100 delegates of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) have stated that at least 25 bar associations should come together and make a call for an extraordinary general assembly meeting.
In a joint statement released by the delegates, it has been noted that "a vote of confidence should be held against TBB Chair Metin Feyzioğlu."
"The result of this vote will go down in both history and the records of the TBB," the statement of the delegates has read further.
'Union Chair is unprincipled and inconsistent'
The delegates have referred to the recent amendments to the Attorneys' Act, which will enable the establishment of more than one bar in a city.
"That the Union Chair defined this amendment as a revolution has clearly shown what kind of a betrayal lawyers and the profession of defense face," they have noted, arguing that he is "unprincipled and inconsistent": "With his unprincipled and inconsistent behaviors, Union Chair has destroyed the last fragments of his reliability in the eyes of both the public and lawyers."
Noting that "the objection and struggle of all 80 bar associations against the law of multiple bar associations is extremely valuable," the delegates have underlined that "the struggle should continue because the responsibilities arising from their profession and duties as delegates increasingly continue."
Reminding that "some bar associations chairs' and 552 delegates terms in office will be due in October," the undersigned delegates have made a series of calls to the bar chairs, executive committee and delegates:
'25 bar association should make a joint call'
"At least 25 bars should come together without delay and, within the scope of related articles of the Attorneys' Act, they should call an extraordinary general assembly meeting to discuss the amendments to the Act.
"Such a general assembly meeting will set the course of action to be taken by bar associations before the bar elections in October.
"It needs to be discussed what kind of a policy will be pursued in the cities where multiple bar associations will be established. And a vote of confidence should be taken on Metin Feyzioğlu. The result of this vote will go down in both the history and the records of the TBB.
"The current power of representation of the delegation, which will never have as many as 552 delegates, will be of critical importance for the records.
"It is time to make a decision. It is time to decide how we will go down in history: As those who fought or as the ones who gave up?
"If we cry out loud, 'The defense has not hushed and it will not,' it is now time to show that we do not stay silent. The only lost struggle is the one given up!"
