The Parliamentary Committee on Planning and Budget has proposed a new committee to be set up for regulating internet content.
During the negotiations on the "Law Proposal on Amendment to the Unemployment Insurance Law and Some Laws," the committee proposed a new article to be added to the Internet Law.
Accordingly, an Expertise Committee on Digital Mediums will be set up within the parliament to prevent internet use that violates the "personal rights of individuals, right to privacy, basic rights and freedoms and harmful to children's physical and psychological development."
The committee will consist of 17 members. The distribution of its members will be determined by the number of lawmakers of the parties with a group in the parliament.
In early July, President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that social media should be entirely banned or regulated.
"Social media should be reorganized. We want these environments to be regulated," he had said and added, "
"Turkey is not a banana republic. We will bring our proposal on this issue to the parliament. When legal regulation is complete, we will enable every kind of method." (HA/VK)
