The Justice and Development Party (AKP) appealed to the Supreme Election Council (YSK) today (June 3) and objected to its ruling that the district election council chairs and electoral directors, who were previously investigated for having formed the balloting committees in March 31 local elections in an unlawful manner, shall also be on duty in repeat İstanbul Metropolitan Mayoral elections on June 23.
It is expected that the Council will announce its decision regarding the appeal of the AKP after the festive holiday of Ramadan.
After the Şişli 1st District Election Council consulted with the YSK as to whether the investigated district electoral directors could be considered eligible to be on duty in repeat Metropolitan Mayoral elections in İstanbul, the YSK reviewed the petition of the district election council and answered that there has been no changes with regards to the issue.
Reaction by the main opposition CHP
Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Spokesperson Faik Öztrak shared a message on his Twitter account regarding the issue and evaluated the ruling of the YSK in following words:
"If the District Election Council Chairs and Electoral Directors have a fault, why do you re-run the elections with the same chairs and directors? If the chairs and directors do not have any faults, then, why do you re-run the elections?" (TP/SD)
