Van Municipality Mayor Arrested

Van Metropolitan Mayor Bekir Kaya from Democratic Regions Party (DBP) has been arrested on charge of "knowingly and willingly aiding an [illegal] organization".

Together with Kaya, four other municipality staff members were taken into custody in an operation carried out yesterday (November 17) in the early morning hours.

While the other three municipality staff members were conditionally released, Kaya and landscape architect Zelal Tanlı were arrested.

Yesterday, a trustee was appointed to Van Metropolitan Municipality.

As of November 18, there are 38 arrested co-Mayors from DBP. (ÇT/DG)
