8 university has elected their rectors on April 12.
Academic members of Boğaziçi University, Middle East Technical University (OTDU), Ankara University, Fırat University, Trakya University, Akdeniz University, Ondokuz Mayıs University and Çukurova University have made their choices. Now YÖK(High Education Board) and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are next to make the assignment decisions. According to the current Higher Education Law, university has to report the 6 most outvoted candidates elected by academic members to the YÖK. YÖK proposes 3 out of 6 candidates to the President. President assigns which candidate he wants.
YÖK on the other hand, has the authority to not list the candidate with the highest vote on the first rank on its proposal list. And the President has the right to ignore the choices made by the universities themselves.
President didn’t adhere to the election results 17 times
President Erdoğan has assigned 59 rectors during his presidentship. Erdoğan has ignored the elections of universities in 17 out of 59 assignments in total. He has assigned the candidates who has not been overvoted in the elections of 17 universities.

58 out of 59 rectors whom President Erdogan has assigned are men.
University election results which were not abided by
Those who were assigned as rectors despite not being ranked as first in the elections of universities are as follows:
*Adnan Menderes University, Prof. Dr. Cavit Barcan. He is ranked as second in the elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Balıkesir University, Prof. Dr. Kerim Özdemir ranked as third in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Celal Bayar University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kemal Çelebi ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Gebze Technical University, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, Prof. Dr. Durmuş Deveci ranked as third in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Mersin University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Çamsarı ranked as third in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Mustafa Kemal University, Prof. Dr. Hasan Kaya ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Bursa Technical University, Prof. Dr. Arif Karademir ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Prof. Dr.Yücel Acer ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Muş Alparslan University, Prof. Dr. Fethi Ahmet Polat ranked as third in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Uludağ University, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Olcay ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Harran University, Prof. Dr. Ramazan Taşaltın ranked as fifth in elections, third in YÖK’s list.
*İstanbul University, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Ahi Evran University, Prof. Dr. Vatan Karakaya ranked as second in elections, first in YÖK’s list.
*Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Prof. Dr. Adem Korkmaz ranked as second, first in YÖK’s list.
*Aksaray University, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Şahin ranked as second in elections, second in YÖK’s list.
