The restoration for commercial use of Historical Haydarpaşa Terminal whose roof was burnt down in 2010 has been cancelled. The new construction plan has been approved upon being also licenced by Kadıköy Municipality, the restoration is expected to be undertaken soon.
Turgay Kartal from Haydarpaşa Inıtiative reminded that stopping the profit-oriented restauration was a victory and one of the two lawsuits brought for the further use of the station as a terminal against the construction plan was won, yet another still continued.
“We have managed make the restoration done in compliance with its original construction. This is an asset, yet it is essential that Haydarpaşa is further used as a terminal to which trains approach. Our lawsuit brought against the commercial use of the harbour succeeded, other trials against the construction plan for commercial use of the railway station and Kadıköy area continues.
“We hope that this will also be cancelled. It is necessary to develop new a protection-based and not a profit-based construction plan.”
The roof was burnt down five years ago
The restoration of the Haydarpaşa Terminal whose roof was burnt down on November 28, 2010, had turned into a long-winded story. The construction plan which was developed by Turkish State Railways (TCDD) demanded a cafeteria, elevator and a roof extension to the roof without adhering to the original construction of the station.
Kadıköy Municipality had not warranted a construction licence for the restoration of Haydarpaşa Terminal as it would damage the original structure of the historical building.
Meanwhile Kadıköy Municipality has approved the project remarking that the historical building would be restored in compliance with its original in the new restoration project developed by the General Directorate of Turkish State Railways. (NV/DG)
