JINHA correspondent Beritan Canözer detained on allegation of “being feverish” during tracking news has been sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison.
Canözer was being tried on charges of “[illegal] organization propaganda” and “[illegal] organization membership” in the hearing held by Diyarbakır 4th Heavy Penal Court. Canözer has been acquitted from the charge of “[illegal] organization membership] but sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison over “[illegal] organization membership”.
While the court defers the announcement of the verdict, it ruled 5-year supervised release of Canözer.
What had happened?
Beritan Canözer had been taken into custody during following up the protest march against the curfew declared in Sur district of Diyarbakır for being “feverish”.

After being held in the Anti-Terror Department, she had been put on trial on December 19 and was arrested for the notes she had taken for her report and her posts on social media.
According to the indictment presented to 4th Diyarbakır Criminal High Court, she is being accused of “propagandizing for the terrorist organization”, and “being a member of the terrorist organization”.
Canözer had received the Special Jury Award within the 19th Metin Göktepe Journalism Awards (ÇT/TK).
