Savur District Co-Mayor Gülistan Öncü, Mazıdağı District Co-Mayor Nalan Özaydın and Derik District Co-Mayor Mülkiye Esmez from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) have been taken into custody in house raids in Turkey's southeastern province of Mardin.
Detained on the ground that there are ongoing investigations against them, the co-mayors have been taken to the Mardin Provincial Security Directorate. The municipality buildings have been blockaded by the police after the co-mayors have been taken into custody.
Suruç Co-Mayor in Urfa also detained
HDP's Suruç Co-Mayor Hatice Çevik has also been detained in Turkey's southeastern province of Urfa. Çevik has been taken to the Anti-Terror Branch of Urfa Provincial Security Directorate for her deposition.
Taking security measures around the municipality and preventing the personnel from entering, the police have started searching the building.
Municipality personnel taken into custody
In addition to four HDP Co-Mayors in Urfa and Mardin, Derik Municipality personnel Müslime Özbahçeci, Hediye Güneş, Burhan Temel amd Feyzullah Erol have also been detained as part of the investigation. (HA/SD)
