ILGA Rainbow Index: Turkey remains second-worst country for LGBTI+s in Europe

The latest edition of ILGA Europe's Rainbow Map, which has been published annually since 2009, has been released. In the study that examined the situation of LGBTI+ rights in 49 European countries between January and December 2022, Turkey ranked 48th, as it has been for the past five years. Azerbaijan is in last place on the list.

The top four on the list are Malta (89.29%), Belgium (76.3%), Denmark (75.542%), and Spain (74.10%), respectively. Belarus, Russia, Armenia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan are at the bottom of the list.

According to the reports published since 2009, Turkey's score was in the 14-15% range until 2015. Turkey, which declined to 12% in 2015, received 9% in 2016, 2017, and 2018, 5% in 2019, and has been at 4% since 2020, placing it at the bottom of the list.

The Turkey section included in the report describes in detail the LGBTI+ rights violations that took place in Turkey in 2022.

The three-page Turkey report includes President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan targeting LGBTI+s through the "family" concept. The problems of LGBTI+ refugees are also highlighted.

The report also extensively covers the anti-LGBTI+ "Big Family" gathering and brochures calling for the death of LGBTI+ individuals held in Turkey.

Additionally, it is noted that artist Mabel Matiz is targeted by hate speech due to his song. The report also includes hate speech directed towards Gülşen and provides detailed information about the investigations. (EMK/VK)
