Paris Bar Association has granted arrested Attorney and LGBTI activist Levent Pişkin a honorary membership.
In the statement published on its website, the bar association has characterized Pişkin being taken into custody as "an attack on the independence and the right of defence of a lawyer's profession.
Urging the Turkish authorities to remove all measures hindering lawyers from performing their duty of defending, Paris Bar Association demanded that Pişkin be released immediately.
What had happened?
Attorney and LGBTI activist Levent Pişkin has been taken into custody in his apartment in İstanbul today (November 14) in an operation.
Pişkin was delivered to Bursa as the investigation into him was launched there.
Pişkin had met Peoples' Democratic Party arrested co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş in Edirne F- type Prison on November 5. Takvim daily, Sabah daily, Ulusal Kanal and some other media outlets had claimed that Pişkin would forward Demirtaş's messages to a magazine in Germany to be used for propaganda.
His attorneys lodge an appeal to revoke the sentence. In an oral statement, the prosecutor's office in charge announced that Pişkin's testimony would be taken on Wednesday (November 16) and the objection would be evaluated after his testimony.
Who is Levent Pişkin?
Levent Pişkin is an attorney and LGBTI activist. He is also the HPD Istanbul Provincial Execute. He works in the Memory Center and does his Master's degree at Boğaziçi University Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History. (ÇT/DG)
