Journalist Beritan Canözer, a reporter for Jin News website, has been sentenced to 1 year, 10 months, 15 days in prison over her Twitter and Facebook posts, comments and likes between the years 2013 to 2016. Canözer has been charged with "propagandizing for an organization."
While the journalist did not attend her third hearing at the Diyarbakır 11th Heavy Penal Court today (June 17), her attorney Resul Tamur was present at court. The prosecutor's office reiterated its previous opinion as to the accusations and demanded the penalization of Beritan Canözer.
Attorney Resul Tamar indicated that they did not agree with the opinion of the prosecutor's office, adding that the investigation was launched when there had been no criminal evidence againt Canözer.
Tamur said that his client was facing charges due to 1 like and 4 comments on social media and underlined that the comments in question did not constitute a crime. The likes and comments were not open to everyone and they were obtained by the special efforts of the security directorate, attorney Tamur added and requested his client's acquittal.
The court board has announced its ruling after the recess and ruled that journalist Beritan Canözer shall be sentenced to 1 year, 10 months, 15 days in prison on charge of "propagandizing for an organization."
While the prison sentence of the journalist over 4 comments and 1 like has not been deferred, Tamur has said that they will appeal against it.
