Taken into custody yesterday (May 27) upon the criminal complaint of President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) İzmir Youth Organizations' İzmir Secretary and Karabağlar Municipal Council member Dilara Koyurga has been placed under house arrest.
Accused of insulting the then Prime Minister Erdoğan with her social media messages from seven years ago, when she was 17 years old, Koyurga was referred to first courthouse, then to the penal judgeship of peace on duty.
The penal judgeship of peace has ruled that Koyurga shall be released on probation on the condition that she does not leave her residence.
Applying to the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office via his attorney Ahmet Özel, President and ruling AKP Chair Erdoğan filed a criminal complaint against five CHP members, namely CHP İzmir Provincial Organization Vice Chair Yasin Ergül, CHP Youth Organizations' İzmir Secretary and Karabağlar Municipal Council member Dila Koyurga, CHP's Gaziemir Mayor Halil Arda, CHP İzmir Organization member Caner Gül and CHP İzmir Executive Board member Volkan Gürboğa.
They were all accused of insulting Erdoğan with their social media messages. In his petition to the prosecutor's office, Attorney Özel argued that they insulted a public official via the press, requesting that an investigation be conducted against them as per the Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) and a public action be filed.
