Arrested as part of the investigation launched into “Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) July 15 coup attempt”, former Dicle University President Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Jale Saraç have been released. Saraç is charged with “being an executive at an armed terrorist organization”.
Saraç was first suspended from her job by Council of Higher Education (YÖK), detained on July 20, 2016 and arrested on July 24, 2016.
In the hearing held today (February 21) at Diyarbakır 4th Heavy Penal Court, prosecutor demanded the continuation of arrest for Jale Saraç and Vice President Prof. Dr Aytekin Sır due to the effect and nature of the charges pressed.
The court ruled for Jale Saraç and. Aytekin Sır to be released with an international travel ban.
About Saraç
Ranked number three in the university presidential elections in 2008, Saraç was appointed as the university president by then President Abdullah Gül.
It was reported in the media that Saraç had cut one-month salary, imposed two reprimands and launched 11 investigations into her competitor who had received most votes and ranked first in the election.
Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Dicle University, Saraç was one of Diyarbakır MP candidates of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). (BK/TK)
