An investigation has been launched against Canan Kaftancıoğlu, who was Elected Provincial Chair at Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul 36th Ordinary Provincial Session on Saturday (January 13), on charges of “terrorism propaganda” and “insulting the President”.
State-run Anadolu Agency reported that an investigation report was made on the claim that Kaftancıoğlu “propagandized for the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and DHKP-C (Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front)”.
During her candidacy, Kaftancıoğlu was criticized for commemorating those who lost their lives in the Armenian Genocide; for her posts about Berkin Elvan who lost his life by a cartridge fired by a police during Gezi Resistance; for her tweets saying that “We are soldiers of Mustafa Kemal’ is “militaristic” so she prefers “We are comrades of Mustafa Kemal”.
These tweets have been put into circulation in the wake of Kaftancıoğlu being elected Provincial Chair and she was accused of “terrorism propaganda”.
On her Twitter account, Kaftancıoğlu wrote:
“I am a doctor and mother. I as a person who has devoted her entire life to human rights struggle have always denounced terrorism and terrorist organizations! My whole purpose and works aim to canonize the state of Republic of Turkey and my criticism are within this responsibility
“I will settle accounts with everyone who run smear campaign against me and my party before judge”. (EA/TK)
