PM Yıldırım Withdraws Defamation Cases

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has withdrawn 1,500 cases he brought against figures including politicians, writers and journalists.

Yıldırım’s attorney Tuba Kılıç submitted petition of withdrawing cases, state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.

The petition stated that the purpose of withdrawing the cases is to “contribute to social consensus that has come into existence following the July 15 coup attempt” and read “now it is time make fresh starts, open new pages”.

Yıldırım on CNN Türk TV program he attended on August 2 had said, “I also have withdrawn my cases against opposition. It doesn’t only involve the three [political party] leaders but also writers, journalists, etc. It seems I have 1,500 cases. We don’t wish to be engaged in a lawsuit with anybody. There is a cost to being politician. We have to protect the dignity of the post. We have no more lawsuits will be necessary”.

Erdoğan had withdrawn too

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had withdrawn defamation cases he brought against the leaders of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Republican People’ Party (CHP) on August 1. (HK/TK)
