Legislative Proposal from CHP for Imprisoned Children Correspond Free of Charge

Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Eren Erdem has submitted a legislative proposal suggesting an amendment of the Law No. 5275 on Execution of Sentences and Security Measures.

In the legislative proposal, it has been pointed out to the situation, that many of the child prisoners are not in the possession of a regular income and 35% of them do not even have any fundings to afford sending letters.

To compensate the trauma

It has been stated that the legislative proposal is aimed at lessening the problems to which the children were exposed in detention houses and the psychological traumata caused by these.

“Awarding the children the right to correspond free of charge will make it easier for them to communicate with their families or at least not to cut already existing communication and thus get rehabilitated.

“On the other hand, in line with the right to correspond free of charge, exchanging letters will also be promoted which will accelerate the rehabilitation process and lessen the effects of the traumata experienced”.

Human rights activist and former Director of Civil Society in Penal System Foundation, Zafer Kıraç had been on a peaceful protest since the beginning of this year for awarding the child prisoners the right to correspond free of charge. Kıraç demands not only concern child prisoners with bad financial situations but he requires four letters free of charge in a month for all children. (YY/DG)
