Three children got missing in Kızılırmak River in Turkey's Central Anatolian province of Sivas yesterday (June 11). While the deceased bodies of the children have been found, it has been understood that they were the children of seasonal agricultural workers who came to the city for potato planting.
Children named Mahmut Yağmur (12), Kadir Yağmur (10) and Mehmet Zurnacı (8) got in the Kızılırmak River in Kızılkavraz village. After the children were reported missing, the gendarmerie officers, health and Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) teams were referred to the area.
After the clothes of children were found by the river, the AFAD teams started searching for them in the river. The deceased bodies of the children were found 50 meters away from the spot where they got missing. They have been referred to the mortuary of the Cumhuriyet University Health Services Application and Research Hospital.
On the other side, Hasan Karakuş (29), who was also reported missing in the water, was understood to leave the river after seeing that children got missing and went to the police station to ask for help.
Finding out that Karakuş is alive, the teams have stopped their search and rescue operations in the area.
54 agricultural workers died in May
According to the latest data shared by the Health and Safety Labor Watch (İSİG Assembly), six child workers lost their lives in occupational homicides in agricultural sector in May. While 156 workers in total died in May, 54 of them were working in agriculture. In other words, 35 percent of occupational homicides occurred in this sector. (AÖ/SD)
