Tents of Romani people removed in İzmir: 'We suffer from this for 30 years'

The tents of Romani people in the district of Çeşme in the Aegean İzmir province have been taken down by municipality teams.

Protesting the removal of their tents, citizens have said that the authorities have not kept their promises, noting that they have been subjected to the same treatment for the last 30 years when they have been living there.

As reported by gercekizmir.com local news website, the tents were in Şahin Tepesi Area of Alaçatı Neighborhood in Çeşme.

With their tents taken down by the municipality, the Romani citizens have stated that the municipality promised to give them containers, but this promise has not yet been kept.

Indicating that they work in the private sector, collecting scraps, they have protested that they have been living in Çeşme and they have been suffering from the same treatment all those 30 years.

AKP MP met with Deputy Minister

Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) İzmir MP Cemal has met with officials from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization about the issue. As reported by "Ege'de Son Söz" (Last Word in the Aegean) local news website, Bekle has briefly stated the following:

"Yesterday, around 100 tents where our Romani people who live in Alaçatı, Çeşme were taken down by the teams of Çeşme Municipality.

"Our extensive talks about the issue are still ongoing. I will make a detailed statement in the upcoming days. In our visit to our Deputy Minister of Environment and Urbanization Fatma Varan, we made negotiations about how we can find an urgent solution to the problems of our citizens left homeless." (EKN/SD)
